Over the last few years, professional sports experience has been evolving with the advent of big data analytics and technology. Various leagues and individual teams are finding newer ways to connect with their fans, personalize the fans’ experience, and in turn, increase their revenue.

Fan-360

As I work with diverse customers in the sports and entertainment industry, I observe more and more companies (leagues, teams, etc) building a 360-degree view of their fans (Fan-360). This gives them visibility to the different ways their fans engage with them. E.g. streaming their events on OTT platforms, buying merchandise online, viewing the matches in the stadium, engaging with their brand on social media, etc. While increasing the revenue, the league/teams have also been able to improve the experience of fans by providing customized content and exclusive deals.

Augmenting the real-world

Augmented reality has also enhanced the experience of fans/viewers lately. We see our real-world being enhanced by computer-generated information like ball tracking to predict the trajectory of the ball. (E.g., in the image below, the red area in the ball trajectory is the path ball had traveled before hitting the batter, and the blue area is the path ball would have continued to travel, as predicted by the computer)
